Arrival at Kent International Airport

The massive airport. See the distance between the car park and the
entrance. There were just 4 check-ins and only 28 people on our flight.

We went anti-clockwise from Gerona
to Cadaqués, El Port de
la Selva, Figueres,
Besalú, Banyoles,
Santa Pau. We walked to Olot and
then headed back to Gerona from Santa Pau. |

After leaving luggage at our hotel in the
Barri Vell (Pensió Viladomat) we had a fantastic menu del dia
at Le Bistro. The dessert, mel
i mató, was of a texture I've never before experienced!
I liked all the little details in Spain that are well done, that there
were goldfish in this garden underneath the city wall.

View of Gerona from the city wall. We weren't overwhelmed by the new
University - the building in the foreground. Here's an example the
opposite to the goldfish one, the little details here, such as the
materials used for the roof, were wrong and the building didn't work
in it's context.

Marcus and Gerona from the city wall. Ah mountains, I've been living
too long in a flat city!

We wandered around El Call, the old jewish quarter, and we didn't
see another soul. Out of tourist season it felt as if we had the place
to ourselves.

Our Pension was roughly opposite these two interesting shops. Moriscot
had some weird and wonderful sausages but lost credibility slightly
due to the Marmite in the shop window (along with the liquer with
pickled baby rats - I mean it!).

We spent ages looking for this little fellow in the Plaça del
Vi. The guide book mentioned the face of an ursurper, or userer, who
was turned to stone. I was keen to find him as rubbing his nose will
cancel all your debt. Unfortunately he's about 3metres high and I
couldn't reach and thought it might look a bit desperate if I climbed
on Marcus' shoulders, so I will have to continue to live in debt.

After a VERY rich hot chocolate for breakfast a backwards look at

Cadaqués
A nice little port famous because Dalí used to kick about here
with Gala and his arty friends. I didn't want to spend all day here
because there were too many tourists and it reminded me of the Greek
islands, and I've been to nicer, quieter towns there. When we sat
on the road side for 10 minutes we heard English and French voices
pass us more regularly than Castillian Spanish or Catalan. In the
car park 5 of every 6 cars were from France. I think part of the charm
of this place is the context - so many other costal towns in the Costa
Brava have aparently become dominated by large hotel blocks and tourists
on sandy beaches, in that context this place must be very charming.
As we didn't bother going to those other towns we missed that context.
